The Science Behind ARC Grow:
Why It Can Support Children in New Jersey Facing Trauma and Behavioral Challenges

As a caregiver, it is natural to want reassurance that the support your child receives is grounded in research, child development, and evidence-based practices. Families often want to understand not only what a program does, but why it works.

At Time Turners Counseling & Consulting, LLC, we use ARC Grow as part of our trauma-informed approach to supporting children, adolescents, and families across New Jersey. ARC Grow is built on decades of research surrounding stress, emotional development, attachment, and resilience.

The framework is designed to help families better understand how difficult experiences can impact behavior, relationships, and emotional regulation—and how healing and growth can happen over time.

1. Understanding How Stress Impacts the Brain

Research shows that ongoing stress and difficult life experiences can affect how children respond emotionally and behaviorally. Some children may become highly reactive, emotionally overwhelmed, withdrawn, or constantly alert to potential danger.

In these moments, the brain often prioritizes survival responses over problem-solving or reasoning.

ARC Grow addresses this through its focus on Regulation. Families learn strategies that support calming, predictability, emotional awareness, and routine. These tools can help children and caregivers feel more grounded and supported during stressful moments.

2. Why Attachment Plays an Important Role in Healing

Children develop emotional security through safe, supportive relationships. When stress, instability, or difficult experiences affect those relationships, children may struggle with trust, communication, or emotional regulation.

ARC Grow focuses on Attachment by helping caregivers strengthen connection and responsiveness within the family. Skills such as attunement—recognizing and responding to a child’s emotional cues—can help children feel more understood, supported, and emotionally safe.

The goal is not perfection, but creating stronger and healthier patterns of connection over time.

3. Building Confidence, Resilience, and Growth

Healing is not only about reducing challenges. It is also about helping children and caregivers recognize strengths, build confidence, and develop resilience.

ARC Grow’s Competency domain focuses on helping families create routines, recognize progress, and support positive identity development. Activities and conversations are designed to encourage problem-solving, emotional growth, and a stronger sense of capability for both caregivers and children.

By focusing on resilience alongside emotional support, ARC Grow helps families move beyond simply managing stress toward creating healthier long-term patterns.
